James Byrnes
James has a broad commercial and equity practice. He regularly appears in the Queensland Courts and the Federal Court system, including at appellate level, and has acted in interstate matters. He was admitted in 2008 and called to the Bar in 2016.
James has a wide range of experience in civil litigation, with particular expertise in commercial disputes, insurance, insolvency, wills and estates, property law, professional negligence and judicial review.
In addition to his practice at the Bar, James has tutored Equity and Trusts at the Queensland University of Technology and has published a number of legal works, including as a co-author of a chapter in Joint Ventures Law in Australia (third edition) on fiduciary obligations between parties to unincorporated joint ventures and as a co-author of Nutshell Equity (fifth and sixth editions).
Prior to being called to the Bar, James was a Senior Associate at Clayton Utz. He also worked in London as an Associate in the commercial disputes group at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and as an in-house litigation lawyer at Deloitte.
James holds a Master of Laws from QUT, a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from UQ and a Bachelor of Arts from UQ. He is an affiliate member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.
